I WAS the calendar staffer. It sucks but the two that got cut from editorial right before me editor RD (AMAZING at what they did) and photo editor JR (IRREPLACEABLE) WOW those two were SO amazing at their jobs. And the other people so far WOW WOW. These are big hitters, folks. Not everyday staffers like me....

Final Indy count: 37 in the building.

16 in the newsroom/online; 1 in the library; 4 in building services (all areas covered by the Guild). Of the 17 newsroom folks, 10 were covered by the contract and 7 were managers (who aren't covered). Included a manager and a reporter (who also did some editing but was covered) who both had been here (and at The News, The Star's now-dead sister paper) around 30 years. Some very good people had to leave today. An extremely difficult day for everyone in a very collegial, homey newsroom.

The Indianapolis cuts managed to decimate the Guild's bargaining committee as well; it lost the near-irreplaceable secretary and a dedicated steward as well as at least one hardworking volunteer.

And the head of HR seriously asked in the end-of-day sit-down with the Guild if they could resume negotiations next week.
