Gannett outsources severance

Gannettoid.com | news@gannettoid.com | Posted: July 11, 2009 • Morning report

Gannett spokeswoman Robin Pence has twice responded to e-mails about the severance packages and Gannett's choosing of Total Management Solutions:

On July 9, Pence wrote: "Those employees who are impacted by this have or will receive detailed information about the plan. We do have people available to answer questions they may have and we encourage those employees who are leaving the company to reach out to the contacts we have provided each of them. One of the reasons we are working with TMS is that they are experts on a state-by-state basis so truly the best thing is for our people to work directly with them to ensure they have accurate information."

Pence also responded to a question in that e-mail about the total number of employees being laid off. She said: "I can confirm for you that the total number of people impacted is approximately 1,400."

On July 8, Pence wrote, "As employees are notified this week, they will be provided with detailed information and customized packages that explain the transition pay plan in detail. We selected Total Management Solutions to help us administer the plan as other companies have done when they have implemented this kind of plan. The program itself was developed by us and the provisions are specific to our employees."

Total Management Solutions offers, "supplemental unemployment benefit (SUB-Pay) plan solutions and an authority in reducing severance costs," according to the company's LinkedIn page. According to the company's Web site, they offer a SUB-Pay Plan, which is "used to supplement state unemployment benefits, and to reduce FICA and FUTA taxes otherwise payable in typical severance arrangements. SUB-Pay Plans are subject to both federal and state code and regulations. Payments can not be made in the form of a lump sum."
